I produced this painting based upon the story passed down within my culture through generations, to depict the woman who was able to deceive yet gain the trust of a murderer. I created this painting with oil and acrylic paint, to allow the option of conserving the limited oil paint supply I had. This picture came directly from an anonymous artist.

Meaning of the Artwork
The meaning of this artwork is very plain, just royalty. I decided upon royalty because it connects to my mothers family and their royalty status. How my grandfather decided to throw it all away and live in poverty, and because of that my mother was not able to live like a typical human being. Being raised poor and with basically nothing. As I finished this painting, it reminded me greatly of how my mother looked when she was younger. And when I seen that resemblance, I was able to configure the meaning into my mothers life. She is a lost princess, and I, her offspring was never able to witness my mother at her proudest. To this day, I think bad thoughts about my grandfather for causing my mother live such a harsh life, it was all because of him that she lived an extremely sad life, I will not be able to forgive him for that. It's a bad thing to hold a grudge, however, when it comes to my mother, I can hold as many grudges as I want for her sake, because I love her just as any child would love a mother. And I have vowed to bring her back her lost wealth, not necessarily appearing to my grandfather's family, but of creating my own wealth that I can and give her a life she was never able to, and a life the men in her life were never able to give her like my grandfather and father. She was basically the man of the family, having to do everything on her own, thus, in honor of my mother, this is her being able to enjoy being a woman rather than having to work so hard to provide for her children.
Another meaning I've incorporated would be the story of Arabian nights, of the king who trusts no one due to his cheating mother. He kills many women, then he met Shahrazad who told him a story and would cut it off every night and continue the next day in order to keep him curious and not kill her, in the end he ends up marrying her rather than killing her.

Artist Inspiration
ACT Questions
1. The cause and effect relationship between my artwork and inspiration is very identifiable. As it creates a very powerful message of royalty, with the mixture of beauty that adheres every person the artwork is seen by very powerless. Not only does it do such a thing, but it also provides a connection of women having power. Even though they are used for media and attention, they are also humans of their own that illustrate value.
2. My chosen inspiration, Art Nouveau, depicts women as tools to be used by the industrial world, which utilizes their beauty for selling their products such as cigars and baby food. Even though some people don't smoke, the ads might cause them to just because they want to appear as good as the advertisement does. It also portrays the idea that women that smoke are more attractive.
3. Researching my topic allowed me the chance to dive into the industry world of illustration and advertisement, which I never bothered to researching since it was truly over looked. Thus, this inspiration allowed me to dive into the reason people do what they do. Like what my grandfather did, because he was advertised another religion. which made him throw away everything in his life.
4. The central idea and theme around my art is royalty, as the title suggests. In order to be a royalty, one must an extreme amount of money. This is not the case for every monarchy country. However, it was a big factor to the British Indian Island my grandfather deserted, for a very pointless idea and a different religion. My theme revolves around my grandmothers and mother's strength to bring their family and guide them as men.
5. After researching my topic, I figured that turning my ideas into a painting was the beast way to depict royalty and class. I could have had chosen to paint gold surrounding the main character of my painting. however I thought that was very cliche. Including the way paint was manipulated throughout the Art Nouveau movement allowed for a better depiction of beauty in royalty.

Process
Step 1 - Create your process pictures, anything you imagine when you think of royalty, of decisiveness, of mistrust and betrayal, and favorably of anything that allows you to imagine a person being able to help someone warm up to them and cease their streak of hatred and murder. Now, that is what I had to think of when when I was deciding about my theme. Not the same theme for you or anyone else necessarily.
|
Step 2 - Begin creating your canvas and gesso it. After doing that, try to illustrate the color that fits in the most when you think of your theme. When I had to think of a color, I illustrated dark purple to a reddish color, because that's what fits most with royalty and betrayal. Basically anything that has to do with mystery. Now be warned, you might end up using a color that is either too light or too dark, which tends to blend in with the actual image you are painting, and that is exactly what happened with my Royalty piece. I advise you to paint the background color before painting the subject, because it will look like you went around the subject with the background color and it looks just weird. Although, that's exactly what I did, I painted the subject first and it looks weird. Thus, if you're painting the subject, than that is the first thing you do, right after drawing you subject on the canvas.

Experimentations
Step 3 - Begin Experimenting with colors while coloring your subject. This is a very amusing project, yet very tedious, because you will be experimenting with the colors and what you want to make the subject look like. For example, you will have no idea for a bit which color will fit the background color. Or which hair color will look good in contrast to the background color. For me, I had to test which color looked best with the image of the subject and what suited her outfit the most. I began gold streaks and brown but then I did not like how the value of the color compared to the subject, thus I changed it to a pure black color, which I thought looked just perfect. Then I began experimenting which color I can implement in the dress, head wrap, and tattoo, and perhaps give her eyes the hue of the dress color, which will undoubtedly appear just beautiful. I love the experimenting process, since you do not know exactly what you will be utilizing and how exactly your painting will look like.
I tried to experiment a little bit with the skin tone, it became a little too pink, so I decided to go back and fix it. I made her appear a degree paler than I had made her at first. I tried to add a gradation of green for her necklace and the pearls that are wrapped around her head piece. I also added a small amount of green shades to the head piece to give it the gold appearance that I was going for. Also, trying to shade the skin was fun, and I did not think it was difficult, however, I recently seen how shadows look like, and they are not something to blend in. They are different gradation and are solid rather than having it blend in along the skin. It may have a different shading scale, however, it never blends in to create another color. It merely has a solid dark shade, and a solid light shade.
Reflection
Creating this painting was of an utmost pleasure. I had fun deciding on the colors that would eventually complement each other, while also the colors that would eventually be created from the mixing of these certain colors. I decided upon the background color through thinking about royalty, while also deciding upon the dress color while thinking about gold and money. Then I utilized the green color because of paper money, and because the color green compliments the gold color, giving it an extremely vibrant and beautiful appearance. All in all, I had no problems with the colors, in contrast, it was to my advantage since I am very passionate about mixing colors, and the experimentation with color outcomes.
Let's go back a few steps, I did not draw this image by heart, after all, I am a very bad drawer, thus I used the projector, which gave a very clear image that I was able to trace upon the canvas. Although, it made me feel as if I was cheating, that it really wasn't my work but someone else's, which is true since I was not the one that created this image. I had found it online and decided to utilize it because it had a very beautiful and royal feeling.
Moving on to the painting portion, it was extremely fun, I had begun with the head wrap, it was a little difficult to create a realistic looking wrap, that also shows the shading where the head piece wraps around each other. As for the green pearls, I had a few problems with making them look realistic, as they tended to look flat, so I had white that I decided to implement and shading the pearls gave it a little bit of a realistic look than if I had left it flat.
Speaking of the dress, I chose gold to compliment the head wrap, to depict her precious head being wrapped up in worth and modesty, most of all it illustrates true beauty, in my eyes at least.
While speaking to a classmate, I asked them about what they thought the meaning was and they said that it looked as if she was trying to hide her thoughts, as if she's in something forbidden. Another person said it liked a gypsy and someone else said she looked like a princess. It sort of gives off the feeling of royalty as I wanted it too.
Deciding on a theme was a little difficult as I was thinking about all the possible things it could be. I decided upon royalty because I thought about all the lost wealth of my family and how my mothers father decided to throw away his wealth and power status. Which is ridiculously stupid as he caused my mothers family poverty.
